In December 2023, the average export price for steel, alloy amounted to $2,762 per ton, with an increase of 3.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 an increase of 5.2% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $3,242 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to December 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($4,484 per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($1,943 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

The import price peaked at $4,555 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to December 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Japan ($4,135 per ton), while the price for Italy ($1,226 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, imports of steel, alloy dropped sharply to $13M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a precipitous curtailment. The smallest decline of -15.7% was in 2020.
