In August 2023, the average export price for stainless steel; flat-rolled products of width less than 600mms amounted to $4,424 per ton, falling by -2.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2023 an increase of 6.7% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $5,022 per ton. From March 2023 to August 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($12,364 per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($810 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+24.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In August 2023, the average import price for stainless steel; flat-rolled products of width less than 600mms amounted to $3,476 per ton, declining by -20.1% against the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 an increase of 39% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $5,589 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to August 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($5,403 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($2,699 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports of Stainless Steel; Flat-Rolled Products of Width Less than 600mm in Belgium
In 2022, shipments abroad of stainless steel; flat-rolled products of width less than 600mms decreased by -4.5% to 59K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +18.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +67.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 54%.
In value terms, exports of stainless steel; flat-rolled products of width less than 600mms soared to $270M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 43%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 25K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, imports of stainless steel; flat-rolled products of width less than 600mms expanded to $84M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated significant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +22.1% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +82.2% against 2019 indices.
