In June 2023, the average smoked fish, incl. fillets import price amounted to $17,277 per ton, with an increase of 21% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 27% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in June 2023.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the countries with the highest prices were France ($20,048 per ton) and Germany ($17,766 per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($16,913 per ton) and Denmark ($17,019 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+16.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average smoked fish, incl. fillets export price stood at $18,127 per ton in May 2023, with a decrease of -3.9% against the previous month. In general, export price indicated tangible growth from May 2022 to May 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.4% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on May 2023 figures, smoked fish, incl. fillets export price decreased by -3.9% against April 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 43% month-to-month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $19,968 per ton. From January 2023 to May 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In May 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to the Netherlands ($19,179 per ton) and France ($18,550 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($15,623 per ton) and Luxembourg ($17,248 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Smoked Fish, Incl. Fillets in Belgium
In 2022, supplies from abroad of smoked fish, incl. fillets decreased by -1.2% to 1.5K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 51%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 1.8K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
