Price for Sheep and Goats; Live in France (FOB) - 2023

The average sheep and goats; live export price stood at $132 per unit in August 2023, surging by 3.5% against the previous month. Overall, export price indicated a mild expansion from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, sheep and goats; live export price decreased by -23.4% against April 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 an increase of 49% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $172 per unit in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to August 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($286 per unit), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($65.9 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In July 2023, the average sheep and goats; live import price amounted to $152 per unit, rising by 2.3% against the previous month. Over the period from July 2022 to July 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 21% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $162 per unit. From January 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Spain.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Spain amounted to +2.0% per month.

Exports of Sheep and Goats; Live in France

In 2022, approx. 494K units of sheep and goats; live were exported from France; rising by 2% compared with the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +12.0% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 496K units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sheep and goats; live exports dropped to $46M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 31%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 301K units, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, sheep and goats; live imports reduced markedly to $31M in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a significant expansion.
