Price for Polypropylene in Primary Forms in Costa Rica (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average polypropylene in primary forms import price amounted to $1,828 per ton, flattening at the previous year. In general, import price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, polypropylene in primary forms import price increased by +50.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 52% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,849 per ton, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($3,876 per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia ($1,570 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+11.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average polypropylene in primary forms export price stood at $796 per ton in 2022, dropping by -15.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 11%. The export price peaked at $1,408 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nicaragua ($1,137 per ton), while the average price for exports to Ecuador ($520 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Colombia (-1.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Imports of Polypropylene in Primary Forms in Costa Rica
In 2022, supplies from abroad of polypropylene in primary forms decreased by -3% to 17K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 7.9% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 18K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, polypropylene in primary forms imports declined to $30M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.0% over the last three-year period.
