Price for Petroleum Lubricating Oil and Grease in the Netherlands (FOB) - 2023

In July 2023, the average export price for petroleum lubricating oil and grease amounted to $5,017 per ton, approximately mirroring the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in August 2022 an increase of 19% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $5,170 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to July 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was France ($6,858 per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($3,778 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+8.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In July 2023, the average import price for petroleum lubricating oil and grease amounted to $5,931 per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 51% month-to-month. The import price peaked in July 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($8,908 per ton), while the price for Italy ($3,726 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+17.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports of Petroleum Lubricating Oil and Grease in the Netherlands

In 2022, the amount of petroleum lubricating oil and grease exported from the Netherlands dropped modestly to 70K tons, standing approx. at 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 7.5% against the previous year.

In value terms, petroleum lubricating oil and grease exports declined to $252M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $255M, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In general, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +19.6% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +71.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 32%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, petroleum lubricating oil and grease imports rose modestly to $148M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +10.7% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
