The average import price for petroleum lubricating oil and grease stood at $4,744 per ton in August 2023, declining by -2.8% against the previous month. Over the period from August 2022 to August 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2022 when the average import price increased by 39% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $5,336 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to August 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($14,166 per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($1,026 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for petroleum lubricating oil and grease stood at $6,901 per ton in August 2023, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous month. In general, the export price showed a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 when the average export price increased by 63% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $19,766 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to August 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In August 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Australia ($9,985 per ton) and Fiji ($7,086 per ton), while the average price for exports to Denmark ($6,679 per ton) and Papua New Guinea ($6,901 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sri Lanka (0.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Imports of Petroleum Lubricating Oil and Grease in New Zealand
In 2022, imports of petroleum lubricating oil and grease into New Zealand reached 4.3K tons, rising by 3.4% compared with 2021 figures.
