The average import price for paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint stood at $700 per ton in 2022, falling by -8.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 21%. The import price peaked at $805 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($899 per ton), while the price for Australia ($294 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Price for Paper and Paperboard, Excluding Newsprint in Oman (FOB) - 2022

The average export price for paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint stood at $761 per ton in 2022, picking up by 7.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 90% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $2,718 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($1,658 per ton), while the average price for exports to Bahrain ($608 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Qatar (+0.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports of Paper and Paperboard, Excluding Newsprint in Oman

In 2022, supplies from abroad of paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint was finally on the rise to reach 152K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced descent.

In value terms, paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint imports shrank slightly to $106M in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 6.8% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $110M, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Exports of Paper and Paperboard, Excluding Newsprint in Oman

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint decreased by -40% to 9.7K tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 305% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 16K tons, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, paper and paperboard, excluding newsprint exports fell significantly to $7.4M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 193%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $11M, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
