Price for Oils from Coal Tar in the United States (FOB) - 2023
The average oils from coal tar export price stood at $797 per ton in September 2023, leveling off at the previous month. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when the average export price increased by 53% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $916 per ton in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to September 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($3,238 per ton), while the average price for exports to Panama ($639 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+12.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Price for Oils from Coal Tar in the United States (CIF) - 2023
The average oils from coal tar import price stood at $742 per ton in September 2023, increasing by 19% against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated a perceptible expansion from September 2022 to September 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, oils from coal tar import price increased by +36.4% against July 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 an increase of 90% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in September 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($2,348 per ton), while the price for Colombia ($414 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+13.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Exports of Oils from Coal Tar in the United States
In 2022, approx. 2.1M tons of oils and other products of the distillation of high temperature coal tar were exported from the United States; shrinking by -6.5% against 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 87%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 2.3M tons, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, oils from coal tar exports soared to $1.8B in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 99%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In 2022, the amount of oils and other products of the distillation of high temperature coal tar imported into the United States surged to 991K tons, with an increase of 49% on the previous year. In general, imports showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 61%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, oils from coal tar imports soared to $834M in 2022. Overall, imports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 109% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
