Price for Oils from Coal Tar in Germany (FOB) - 2023
The average oils from coal tar export price stood at $741 per ton in July 2023, approximately reflecting the previous month. Overall, the export price recorded a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2023 an increase of 21% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $925 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Poland ($867 per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($448 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+0.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Price for Oils from Coal Tar in Germany (CIF) - 2023
In July 2023, the average oils from coal tar import price amounted to $645 per ton, shrinking by -3.4% against the previous month. Overall, the import price saw a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 14% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $929 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Belgium ($972 per ton), while the price for Colombia ($513 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports of Oils from Coal Tar in Germany
After three years of growth, shipments abroad of oils and other products of the distillation of high temperature coal tar decreased by -15.4% to 3.5M tons in 2022. In general, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +16.5% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +58.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 49%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 4.2M tons, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, oils from coal tar exports surged to $3B in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 119% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports of Oils from Coal Tar in Germany
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of oils and other products of the distillation of high temperature coal tar, when their volume decreased by -30.6% to 1.7M tons. In general, imports, however, showed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 2.5M tons, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, oils from coal tar imports reached $1.4B in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 124%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
