The average nickel; unwrought, not alloyed import price stood at $23,433 per ton in September 2023, rising by 2.3% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 16% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $29,931 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to September 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Canada ($26,605 per ton) and Japan ($23,097 per ton), while the price for China ($22,136 per ton) and Norway ($22,545 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average nickel; unwrought, not alloyed export price amounted to $28,781 per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 93%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($82,630 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($25,198 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+38.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Nickel; Unwrought, Not Alloyed in Thailand
In 2022, the amount of nickel; unwrought, not alloyeds imported into Thailand shrank rapidly to 1.6K tons, which is down by -19.7% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 2K tons, and then fell markedly in the following year.

Overall, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +94.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
