Price for Nickel; Unwrought, Not Alloyed in Poland (CIF) - 2023

In June 2023, the average nickel; unwrought, not alloyed import price amounted to $22,957 per ton, with a decrease of -4.1% against the previous month. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 an increase of 13% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $26,944 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to June 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Germany ($25,005 per ton) and Japan ($24,395 per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($22,426 per ton) and Finland ($22,601 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+0.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Price for Nickel; Unwrought, Not Alloyed in Poland (FOB) - 2023

The average nickel; unwrought, not alloyed export price stood at $24,784 per ton in July 2023, approximately reflecting the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 an increase of 14% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $29,870 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to July 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In July 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Belarus ($30,142 per ton) and Belgium ($25,880 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($21,878 per ton) and Italy ($23,310 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belarus (+0.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Nickel; Unwrought, Not Alloyed in Poland

In 2022, overseas purchases of nickel; unwrought, not alloyeds decreased by -15.2% to 3.4K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -24.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 59% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 4.4K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, nickel; unwrought, not alloyed imports skyrocketed to $84M in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports of Nickel; Unwrought, Not Alloyed in Poland

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of nickel; unwrought, not alloyeds, when their volume decreased by -19.2% to 525 tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 649 tons, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, nickel; unwrought, not alloyed exports soared to $14M in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 57%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Nickel prices skyrocketed on the expectations of a shortage on the global market provoked by the increase in demand that outpaces the supply growth. The rebound in the steel industry and rising electric vehicle manufacturing drive nickel consumption.
