Price for Nickel; Plates, Sheets, Strip and Foil in Italy (CIF) - 2023
In December 2023, the average import price for nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils amounted to $35,779 per ton, declining by -15.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2023 an increase of 27% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $45,472 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to December 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($39,041 per ton), while the price for Japan totaled $27,824 per ton.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average export price for nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils amounted to $31,285 per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $34,880 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($55,953 per ton), while the average price for exports to Egypt ($14,790 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Nickel; Plates, Sheets, Strip and Foil in Italy
In 2022, imports of nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils into Italy expanded sharply to 3.7K tons, with an increase of 9.4% on 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 4.2K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, imports of nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils skyrocketed to $115M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +13.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
