In August 2023, the average import price for nickel; bars, rods, profiles and wires amounted to $45,315 per ton, reducing by -3.4% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated a remarkable increase from December 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +8.2% over the last eight-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, import price for nickel; bars, rods, profiles and wires increased by +4.7% against May 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 83% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $46,925 per ton in July 2023, and then reduced slightly in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Spain ($62,309 per ton), while the price for Sweden ($8,107 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+15.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average export price for nickel; bars, rods, profiles and wires amounted to $40,774 per ton, surging by 409% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 6,868% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $149,844 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($132,143 per ton), while the average price for exports to Angola ($5,860 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+29.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Imports of Nickel; Bars, Rods, Profiles and Wire in Portugal
In 2022, the amount of nickel; bars, rods, profiles and wires imported into Portugal expanded sharply to 125 tons, growing by 9% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 91% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, imports of nickel; bars, rods, profiles and wires skyrocketed to $4.2M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a significant increase.
