Price for Natural Bitumen and Asphalt in Thailand (CIF) - 2023
In September 2023, the average natural bitumen and asphalt import price amounted to $1,228 per ton, picking up by 6.7% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, showed a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 149% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,509 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,279 per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($976 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+7.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Price for Natural Bitumen and Asphalt in Thailand (FOB) - 2022
The average natural bitumen and asphalt export price stood at $2,107 per ton in 2022, shrinking by -24.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 120%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $2,791 per ton in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($3,853 per ton), while the average price for exports to Lao People's Democratic Republic ($689 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+10.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Imports of Natural Bitumen and Asphalt in Thailand
In 2022, overseas purchases of natural bitumen and asphalt decreased by -37.1% to 2.6K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 205%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 4.1K tons, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
In value terms, natural bitumen and asphalt imports reduced to $2.6M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +54.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 77% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $3M, and then dropped in the following year.
