The average import price for metals; platinum, unwrought or in powder forms stood at $31.6M per ton in January 2024, waning by -1.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 when the average import price increased by 16% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $33.4M per ton in April 2023; afterwards, it flattened through to January 2024.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In January 2024, the countries with the highest prices were the United States ($35.6M per ton) and Germany ($32.0M per ton), while the price for Italy ($30.0M per ton) and Russia ($30.2M per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

In January 2024, the average export price for metals; platinum, unwrought or in powder forms amounted to $29.8M per ton, stabilizing at the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when the average export price increased by 8.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $37.2M per ton in January 2023; afterwards, it flattened through to January 2024.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In January 2024, the highest price was recorded for prices to France ($33.2M per ton) and China ($31.7M per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($28.6M per ton) and the UK ($28.7M per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+0.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the amount of metals; platinum, unwrought or in powder forms imported into Switzerland was estimated at 31 tons, with an increase of 2.8% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +16.3% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -21.6% against 2020 indices. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +49.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, exports of metals; platinum, unwrought or in powder forms shrank to $393M in 2022. In general, exports posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 69%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $430M, and then reduced in the following year.
