Price for Iron and Steel Wire in the United States (CIF) - 2023

In October 2023, the average iron and steel wire import price amounted to $1,745 per ton, with an increase of 3.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 an increase of 9.9% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $2,110 per ton in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to October 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was India ($3,362 per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($1,091 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Price for Iron and Steel Wire in the United States (FOB) - 2023

In October 2023, the average iron and steel wire export price amounted to $4,671 per ton, growing by 3.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 an increase of 26% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in October 2023.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Costa Rica ($27,363 per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($2,482 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Iron and Steel Wire in the United States

In 2022, the amount of iron and steel wire imported into the United States declined to 699K tons, with a decrease of -5.6% on the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 740K tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, iron and steel wire imports surged to $1.4B in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.8% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +78.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 47%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
