Price for Hydrogen, Rare Gases and Other Non-Metals in Hong Kong SAR (FOB) - 2022

The average export price for hydrogen, rare gases and other non-metalses stood at $20 per cubic meter in 2022, rising by 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a dramatic setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 13%. The export price peaked at $192 per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($23 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Japan ($11 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (-17.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

The average import price for hydrogen, rare gases and other non-metalses stood at $5.8 per cubic meter in 2022, shrinking by -4.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a dramatic decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 60% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $64 per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($13 per cubic meter), while the price for the UK ($0.8 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (-16.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Exports of Hydrogen, Rare Gases and Other Non-Metals in Hong Kong SAR

For the third year in a row, Hong Kong SAR recorded decline in shipments abroad of hydrogen, rare gases and other non-metalses, which decreased by -57.4% to 3M cubic meters in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant decrease. The smallest decline of -0.8% was in 2021. The exports peaked at 7.5M cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, exports of hydrogen, rare gases and other non-metalses plummeted to $61M in 2022. Overall, exports showed a sharp curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 7.1%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $133M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the amount of hydrogen, rare gases and other non-metalses imported into Hong Kong SAR reduced notably to 8.8M cubic meters, shrinking by -66.6% compared with the year before. Overall, imports recorded a sharp decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 30%. Imports peaked at 27M cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of hydrogen, rare gases and other non-metalses fell dramatically to $51M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a sharp setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $173M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.
