In 2022, the average import price for hydrogen, rare gases and other non-metalses amounted to $1.3 per cubic meter, picking up by 66% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The import price peaked at $1.6 per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($2.5 per cubic meter), while the price for Panama ($0.4 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for hydrogen, rare gases and other non-metalses stood at $0.5 per cubic meter in 2022, growing by 12% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, export price for hydrogen, rare gases and other non-metalses increased by +58.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 42%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nicaragua ($1.3 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Curacao ($0.4 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Jamaica (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Hydrogen, Rare Gases and Other Non-Metals in Costa Rica
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of hydrogen, rare gases and other non-metalses decreased by -14.7% to 5.8M cubic meters in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 89%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 6.8M cubic meters, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, imports of hydrogen, rare gases and other non-metalses skyrocketed to $7.6M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 26%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 3.2M cubic meters. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, exports of hydrogen, rare gases and other non-metalses totaled $1.3M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +13.2% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
