Price for Horse, Mule and Donkey Meat in the United States (CIF) - 2023

The average import price for horse, mule and donkey meat stood at $3,213 per ton in August 2023, remaining stable against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2023 when the average import price increased by 14% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $3,378 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to August 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Canada.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Canada amounted to -0.1% per month.

The average export price for horse, mule and donkey meat stood at $3,781 per ton in 2022, dropping by -33% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 116%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $6,568 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Saint Lucia ($3,997 per ton) and Mexico ($3,996 per ton), while the average price for exports to Bahamas ($3,142 per ton) and Venezuela ($3,996 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Venezuela (+39.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Horse, Mule and Donkey Meat in the United States

In 2022, supplies from abroad of horse, mule and donkey meat increased by 43% to 787 tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage.

In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat imports soared to $2.5M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a mild increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last three-year period.
