Price for Frozen, Dried and Smoked Fish in South Africa (FOB) - 2022
The average export price for frozen, dried and smoked fish stood at $3,545 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The export price peaked at $3,851 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($19,372 per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($1,148 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mauritius (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average import price for frozen, dried and smoked fish stood at $1,485 per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -3% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 12% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $2,251 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($5,660 per ton), while the price for Morocco ($937 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Exports of Frozen, Dried and Smoked Fish in South Africa
In 2022, the amount of frozen, dried and smoked fish exported from South Africa shrank markedly to 82K tons, dropping by -29.4% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 34%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 117K tons, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, frozen, dried and smoked fish exports shrank to $291M in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a noticeable contraction.
