In December 2023, the average export price for ferrous waste and scrap; of stainless steels amounted to $1,526 per ton, waning by -3.7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2023 when the average export price increased by 13% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,888 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to December 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($4,348 per ton), while the average price for exports to India stood at $1,021 per ton.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+12.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports of Ferrous Waste and Scrap; of Stainless Steel in Finland
In 2022, approx. 31K tons of ferrous waste and scrap; of stainless steels were exported from Finland; growing by 8.1% against 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated significant growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +21.0% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +77.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, exports of ferrous waste and scrap; of stainless steels skyrocketed to $57M in 2022. In general, exports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
