Price for Copper; Waste and Scrap in Guatemala (FOB) - 2022
The average copper; waste and scrap export price stood at $2,432 per ton in 2022, growing by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 106% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $3,273 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($8,929 per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($379 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+18.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average copper; waste and scrap import price stood at $8,050 per ton in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a slight expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average import price increased by 81%. The import price peaked at $8,514 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Costa Rica ($8,083 per ton), while the price for the United States stood at $5,597 per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Costa Rica (+7.7%).
Exports of Copper; Waste and Scrap in Guatemala
In 2022, overseas shipments of copper; waste and scraps decreased by -14.1% to 2.9K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 3.3K tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, copper; waste and scrap exports reduced modestly to $7M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.6% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +42.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 48%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $7.2M, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
