Price for Copper Bars, Wire and Plates in Vietnam (CIF) - 2021
In December 2021, the average import price for copper bars, wire and plates amounted to $10,049 per ton, reducing by -1.5% against the previous month. Over the period from December 2020 to December 2021, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2021 when the average import price increased by 9.9% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $10,412 per ton in September 2021; however, from October 2021 to December 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2021, the countries with the highest prices were Japan ($12,172 per ton) and Malaysia ($10,141 per ton), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($8,534 per ton) and South Korea ($9,851 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+4.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Price for Copper Bars, Wire and Plates in Vietnam (FOB) - 2021
The average export price for copper bars, wire and plates stood at $9,691 per ton in December 2021, almost unchanged from the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in January 2021 when the average export price increased by 44% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $9,739 per ton in February 2021; afterwards, it flattened through to December 2021.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In December 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices to the United States ($9,859 per ton) and South Korea ($9,812 per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($9,542 per ton) and Myanmar ($9,542 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Copper Bars, Wire and Plates in Vietnam
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of copper bars, wire and plates, when their volume decreased by -5% to 122K tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 129K tons, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, copper bars, wire and plates imports contracted markedly to $1B in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +28.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $1.2B, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Exports of Copper Bars, Wire and Plates in Vietnam
In 2022, shipments abroad of copper bars, wire and plates decreased by -5.5% to 36K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 147% against the previous year.
In value terms, copper bars, wire and plates exports declined to $245M in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 133%.
