The average cocoa; paste, not defatted import price stood at $4,805 per ton in June 2023, approximately mirroring the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 10% against the previous month. The import price peaked in June 2023.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from Switzerland ($5,583 per ton) and France ($4,692 per ton), while the price for Germany ($4,253 per ton) and the Netherlands ($4,425 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cocoa; paste, not defatted export price stood at $6,266 per ton in June 2023, which is down by -10.4% against the previous month. In general, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 54% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $12,521 per ton. From January 2023 to June 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was India ($11,648 per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($4,241 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Cocoa; Paste, Not Defatted in Italy
In 2022, the amount of cocoa; paste, not defatteds imported into Italy totaled 39K tons, surging by 12% against the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cocoa; paste, not defatted imports stood at $163M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.9% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +48.5% against 2020 indices.
