Price for Cocoa; Paste, Not Defatted in Ghana (FOB) - 2022
The average cocoa; paste, not defatted export price stood at $3,172 per ton in 2022, falling by -3.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a slight slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $4,134 per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to France ($3,718 per ton) and Germany ($3,462 per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($2,734 per ton) and Russia ($2,857 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average cocoa; paste, not defatted import price amounted to $3,530 per ton, with a decrease of -15.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $4,516 per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($6,667 per ton), while the price for Japan ($3,111 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+8.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Exports of Cocoa; Paste, Not Defatted in Ghana
Cocoa; paste, not defatted exports from Ghana expanded sharply to 131K tons in 2022, surging by 6.6% against the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cocoa; paste, not defatted exports stood at $414M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 9.4%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
