Price for Coal; Bituminous, Whether or Not Pulverised, But Not Agglomerated in China (CIF) - 2023

In December 2023, the average import price for coal; bituminous, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds amounted to $135 per ton, surging by 6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2023 when the average import price increased by 7% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $184 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to December 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Canada ($279 per ton), while the price for Colombia ($106 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (-0.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

The average export price for coal; bituminous, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds stood at $219 per ton in December 2023, jumping by 17% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 an increase of 31% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $357 per ton. From March 2023 to December 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($323 per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($212 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of coal; bituminous, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds decreased by -15.6% to 117M tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 3.3%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 159M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of coal; bituminous, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds skyrocketed to $23.2B in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +12.9% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +66.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, exports of coal; bituminous, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds surged to $496M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage.
