In December 2023, the average import price for coal; anthracite, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds amounted to $157 per ton, surging by 6.9% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $228 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to December 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($285 per ton), while the price for Russia stood at $152 per ton.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

The average export price for coal; anthracite, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds stood at $238 per ton in December 2023, picking up by 7.5% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, saw a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 when the average export price increased by 12% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $362 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to December 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In December 2023, the countries with the highest prices were the Netherlands ($245 per ton) and Japan ($241 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($231 per ton) and Indonesia ($233 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (-1.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

For the fourth year in a row, China recorded growth in overseas purchases of coal; anthracite, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds, which increased by 21% to 11M tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +15.8% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +55.2% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, imports of coal; anthracite, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds surged to $2.4B in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 108%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Overall, total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +57.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, exports of coal; anthracite, whether or not pulverised, but not agglomerateds soared to $714M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a significant expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
