Price for Cereals; Maize (Corn), Seed in Romania (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average cereals; maize (corn), seed export price amounted to $3,310 per ton, jumping by 45% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a mild decline. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $3,671 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Serbia ($6,656 per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($493 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Moldova (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In July 2023, the average cereals; maize (corn), seed import price amounted to $4,662 per ton, dropping by -14.7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 an increase of 29% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $5,464 per ton in June 2023, and then declined in the following month.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Poland ($6,622 per ton), while the price for Hungary ($3,372 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+16.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports of Cereals; Maize (Corn), Seed in Romania

In 2022, exports of cereals; maize (corn), seeds from Romania contracted to 72K tons, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 73K tons, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

In value terms, cereals; maize (corn), seed exports skyrocketed to $237M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +52.5% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 53%.

In value terms, cereals; maize (corn), seed imports rose rapidly to $151M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a significant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +22.2% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +82.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 54%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
