The average import price for cereals; maize (corn), other than seeds stood at $310 per ton in 2022, rising by 7.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Hungary ($361 per ton) and Belgium ($348 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($249 per ton) and Ukraine ($307 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In August 2023, the average export price for cereals; maize (corn), other than seeds amounted to $317 per ton, with a decrease of -19.8% against the previous month. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 17% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $416 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to August 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the UK ($3,045 per ton), while the average price for exports to Iceland amounted to $304 per ton.

From October 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, overseas purchases of cereals; maize (corn), other than seeds were finally on the rise to reach 5.4M tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, showed a deep downturn.
