In 2022, the average import price for butanols (excluding butan-1-ol (n-butyl alcohol)) amounted to $904 per ton, with a decrease of -8.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 52% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $1,130 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($1,412 per ton), while the price for Russia ($700 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

The average export price for butanols (excluding butan-1-ol (n-butyl alcohol)) stood at $1,283 per ton in September 2023, picking up by 11% against the previous month. Over the period from September 2022 to September 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 an increase of 33% m-o-m. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $1,403 per ton. From November 2022 to September 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In September 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to the United Arab Emirates ($1,416 per ton) and Japan ($1,400 per ton), while the average price for exports to Brazil ($1,230 per ton) and India ($1,258 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Butanols (Excluding Butan-1-Ol (N-Butyl Alcohol)) in China

In 2022, approx. 90K tons of butanols (excluding butan-1-ol (n-butyl alcohol)) were imported into China; with a decrease of -38.4% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 121% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 147K tons, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

In value terms, butanols (excluding butan-1-ol (n-butyl alcohol)) imports contracted notably to $82M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 237% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $144M, and then fell significantly in the following year.
