In 2022, the average import price for articles of apparel and clothing accessories, of leather or of composition leather amounted to $1.1 per unit, increasing by 82% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $1.9 per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($7 per unit), while the price for China ($0.8 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+18.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Articles of Apparel and Clothing Accessories, of Leather or of Composition Leather in Nigeria
In 2022, overseas purchases of articles of apparel and clothing accessories, of leather or of composition leather decreased by -33.4% to 3.5M units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 423% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 5.2M units, and then shrank notably in the following year.
In value terms, imports of articles of apparel and clothing accessories, of leather or of composition leather soared to $3.9M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 152%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
