Price for Apples, Pears and Quinces; Fresh in South Africa (FOB) - 2023
In May 2023, the average export price for apples, pears and quinces; freshes amounted to $797 per ton, which is down by -2.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 an increase of 12% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $814 per ton in April 2023, and then contracted slightly in the following month.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($965 per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya ($492 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average import price for apples, pears and quinces; freshes amounted to $727 per ton, shrinking by -19.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+20.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. 913K tons of apples, pears and quinces; freshes were exported from South Africa; growing by 9.1% on 2021 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 14% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
