Price for Aluminium Waste and Scrap in Portugal (FOB) - 2023
In June 2023, the average aluminium waste and scrap export price amounted to $1,945 per ton, flattening at the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 an increase of 10% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $2,090 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In June 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to Germany ($1,980 per ton) and Spain ($1,946 per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($1,491 per ton) and South Korea ($1,783 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+24.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In June 2023, the average aluminium waste and scrap import price amounted to $2,144 per ton, approximately mirroring the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2023 when the average import price increased by 17% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $2,878 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Spain ($2,195 per ton), while the price for France ($1,387 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (-1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Exports of Aluminium Waste and Scrap in Portugal
After three years of growth, shipments abroad of aluminium waste and scraps decreased by -12.8% to 62K tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 71K tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, aluminium waste and scrap exports dropped notably to $96M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $127M, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Imports of Aluminium Waste and Scrap in Portugal
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of aluminium waste and scraps, when their volume decreased by -26% to 18K tons. In general, imports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 101% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 24K tons, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
In value terms, aluminium waste and scrap imports fell notably to $33M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 193% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $50M, and then declined markedly in the following year.
