Price for Aluminium Waste and Scrap in Norway (FOB) - 2023

In August 2023, the average aluminium waste and scrap export price amounted to $1,627 per ton, almost unchanged from the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2023 an increase of 8.8% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,761 per ton. From March 2023 to August 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was China ($1,934 per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($1,187 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average aluminium waste and scrap import price amounted to $1,544 per ton, falling by -12.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 45%. The import price peaked at $1,953 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Germany ($1,823 per ton) and the UK ($1,677 per ton), while the price for Sweden ($1,265 per ton) and France ($1,451 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (-0.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Exports of Aluminium Waste and Scrap in Norway

In 2022, shipments abroad of aluminium waste and scraps decreased by -2.3% to 91K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 7.6% against the previous year.

In value terms, aluminium waste and scrap exports reduced markedly to $121M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +39.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 71% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $153M, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Imports of Aluminium Waste and Scrap in Norway

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of aluminium waste and scraps decreased by -16.9% to 35K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +14.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +49.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 43K tons, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, aluminium waste and scrap imports fell significantly to $55M in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 121%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $75M, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
