Price for Aluminium Waste and Scrap in Mexico (FOB) - 2023

In June 2023, the average aluminium waste and scrap export price amounted to $1,705 per ton, with a decrease of -5.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2023 when the average export price increased by 6.1% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $2,330 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was India ($2,366 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($1,481 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average aluminium waste and scrap import price stood at $2,104 per ton in June 2023, picking up by 4.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 5.8% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $2,512 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for the United States.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the United States amounted to -1.5% per month.

Exports of Aluminium Waste and Scrap in Mexico

In 2022, overseas shipments of aluminium waste and scraps decreased by -3.2% to 324K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 6.6%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 334K tons, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, aluminium waste and scrap exports reduced markedly to $485M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +32.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 66%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $606M, and then fell markedly in the following year.
