Preserved Tuna Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2023
In July 2023, the average preserved tuna import price amounted to $5,533 per ton, shrinking by -1.5% against the previous month. Over the period from July 2022 to July 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in October 2022 an increase of 15% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $5,792 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to July 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($5,596 per ton), while the price for the Philippines ($4,370 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+7.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Preserved Tuna Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average preserved tuna export price amounted to $5,935 per ton, falling by -15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, preserved tuna export price decreased by -15.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 45%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $7,008 per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($20,000 per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($2,151 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+15.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Preserved Tuna Imports in New Zealand
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of tuna (prepared or preserved), when their volume decreased by -1.1% to 5.6K tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 7.9% against the previous year.
In value terms, preserved tuna imports dropped to $28M in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 4.6%.
