The average preserved sardines import price stood at $6,314 per ton in 2022, jumping by 87% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed resilient growth. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($6,309 per ton), while the price for Latvia stood at $6,308 per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+17.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average preserved sardines export price stood at $4,619 per ton in 2022, increasing by 175% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($14,782 per ton), while the average price for exports to Australia ($2,662 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+33.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Preserved Sardines Imports in Sri Lanka
In 2022, overseas purchases of sardines (prepared or preserved) decreased by -99.3% to 7.6 tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate a dramatic decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 1.1K tons, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, preserved sardines imports contracted sharply to $48K in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a dramatic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. In value terms, preserved sardines exports surged to $39K in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 448%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $54K. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
