Preserved Herring Price in Australia (CIF) - 2023

The average preserved herring import price stood at $5,325 per ton in July 2023, surging by 7.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 36% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $5,886 per ton. From January 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Canada ($6,101 per ton) and Latvia ($6,076 per ton), while the price for Poland ($4,310 per ton) and Germany ($4,934 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Preserved Herring Price in Australia (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average preserved herring export price amounted to $4,568 per ton, dropping by -6.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 80%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $13,450 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($5,799 per ton), while the average price for exports to New Zealand ($4,256 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (-3.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, approx. 899 tons of herrings (prepared or preserved) were imported into Australia; picking up by 19% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, preserved herring imports soared to $4M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Preserved Herring Exports in Australia

In 2022, shipments abroad of herrings (prepared or preserved) decreased by -59.3% to 5.4 tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 1,529% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 14 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, preserved herring exports fell significantly to $25K in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 671%.
