Platinum Price in Russia (FOB) - 2022
In January 2022, the average platinum export price amounted to $33.2M per ton, picking up by 7.1% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2021 when the average export price increased by 12% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $43.8M per ton in May 2021; afterwards, it flattened through to January 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($66.1M per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($30.9M per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2021 to January 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Switzerland (-0.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Platinum Price in Russia (CIF) - 2022
The average platinum import price stood at $29.8M per ton in January 2022, dropping by -45.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in September 2021 when the average import price increased by 50% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $65,904 per kg. From October 2021 to January 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.
From January 2021 to January 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Germany amounted to +6.7% per month.
Platinum Exports in Russia
After two years of decline, shipments abroad of platinum increased by 2.3% to 24 tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced setback.
In value terms, platinum exports reduced to $787M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $829M, and then contracted in the following year.

Platinum Imports in Russia
In 2022, purchases abroad of platinum decreased by -23.5% to 434 kg for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.1% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +33.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 66%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 567 kg, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
In value terms, platinum imports declined dramatically to $21M in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 127% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $29M, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
