Plastic Closure Price in Australia (CIF) - 2023
The average plastic closure import price stood at $5,091 per ton in August 2023, surging by 10% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, showed a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 11% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $6,214 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($8,530 per ton), while the price for Italy ($2,469 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Plastic Closure Price in Australia (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average plastic closure export price amounted to $6,612 per ton, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 21%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to South Africa ($6,612 per ton) and the United States ($6,612 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($6,612 per ton) and China ($6,612 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to New Zealand (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Plastic Closure Imports in Australia
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of plastic stoppers, caps and closures, when their volume decreased by -7.1% to 32K tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 7.4%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 34K tons, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, plastic closure imports expanded notably to $181M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +12.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Plastic Closure Exports in Australia
In 2022, plastic closure exports from Australia fell significantly to 3.6K tons, waning by -17.3% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 38%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 4.4K tons, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.
