The average paper and paperboard import price stood at $1,261 per ton in July 2023, falling by -6.1% against the previous month. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in August 2022 an increase of 38% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $2,500 per ton. From September 2022 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was the UK ($5,295 per ton), while the price for Egypt ($158 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Paper and Paperboard Price in Thailand (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average paper and paperboard export price amounted to $1,807 per ton, falling by -18% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paper and paperboard export price decreased by -26.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 38% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $2,449 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($7,626 per ton), while the average price for exports to Lao People's Democratic Republic ($871 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Paper and Paperboard Imports in Thailand

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated), when their volume decreased by -35.3% to 1.8K tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 84% against the previous year.

In value terms, paper and paperboard imports fell to $2.7M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 21%.

In 2022, approx. 526 tons of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) were exported from Thailand; rising by 49% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 89% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, paper and paperboard exports surged to $951K in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 70%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
