Packaging Materials Price in Hungary (FOB) - 2022

The average packaging materials export price stood at $941 per ton in 2022, surging by 30% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($1,837 per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovenia ($581 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ukraine (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Packaging Materials Price in Hungary (CIF) - 2022

The average packaging materials import price stood at $987 per ton in 2022, picking up by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Serbia ($1,291 per ton), while the price for Croatia ($599 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Packaging Materials Exports in Hungary

In 2022, shipments abroad of packaging materials decreased by -4.6% to 721K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports saw a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 0.6% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 763K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, packaging materials exports skyrocketed to $678M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +50.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Packaging Materials Imports in Hungary

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of packaging materials decreased by -5.7% to 567K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 602K tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, packaging materials imports amounted to $560M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +12.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +49.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
