The third position in this ranking was taken by India (2M units), with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China amounted to +38.8%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of consumption growth: the United States (+6.9% per year) and India (+14.7% per year).

In value terms, China ($67.8B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($10.6B). It was followed by Russia.

In China, the optical radiation instruments market increased at an average annual rate of +37.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of market growth: Japan (+11.4% per year) and Russia (+10.0% per year).

Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the production volume increased by 42%. Global production peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, optical radiation instruments production contracted modestly to $28.6B in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production posted a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $30.7B in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production By Country

Mexico (4.7M units) constituted the country with the largest volume of optical radiation instruments production, accounting for 35% of total volume. Moreover, optical radiation instruments production in Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (1.6M units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Russia (971K units), with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Mexico stood at +37.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+12.2% per year) and Russia (+10.4% per year).

Imports

World Imports of Instruments Using Optical Radiations

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of instruments using optical radiations decreased by -25.9% to 55M units in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 194% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at 74M units in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, optical radiation instruments imports reached $11.9B in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +91.2% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 15%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports By Country

China prevails in imports structure, recording 44M units, which was near 79% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the United States (3.4M units), making up a 6.1% share of total imports. Canada (2M units) and Brazil (0.9M units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the instruments using optical radiations imports, with a CAGR of +45.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Canada (+26.2%), Brazil (+1.9%) and the United States (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China increased by +65 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

For the third year in a row, the global market recorded growth in shipments abroad of instruments using optical radiations, which increased by 14% to 21M units in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 311%. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, optical radiation instruments exports expanded to $11.7B in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +70.2% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

China was the main exporting country with an export of about 13M units, which recorded 62% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mexico (4.3M units) and the United States (1.1M units), together making up a 26% share of total exports. The following exporters - Germany (559K units) and Thailand (343K units) - together made up 4.3% of total exports.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +18.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+76.6%), Mexico (+40.5%) and Germany (+11.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +76.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United States (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mexico, China and Thailand increased by +18, +17 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($3B), Germany ($1.8B) and China ($566M) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 45% of global exports.

China, with a CAGR of +24.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average optical radiation instruments export price stood at $566 per unit in 2022, shrinking by -10.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 127%. The global export price peaked at $3,806 per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
