Moreover, nitrates production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the United States (323K tons), threefold. India (245K tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 8.2% share.

In China, nitrates production expanded at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: the United States (+16.1% per year) and India (+7.5% per year).

Imports

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 17%. Global imports peaked at 826K tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In 2022, the United States (99K tons), followed by France (63K tons), Germany (38K tons) and Australia (36K tons) were the major importers of nitrates (excluding those of potassium), together making up 33% of total imports. The following importers - Italy (28K tons), Japan (25K tons), Thailand (23K tons), Canada (23K tons), South Korea (22K tons), Spain (21K tons), South Africa (20K tons), Mexico (19K tons) and the UK (18K tons) - together made up 28% of total imports.

The average nitrates import price stood at $780 per ton in 2022, picking up by 47% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($1,321 per ton), while the United States ($339 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, China (251K tons) and Norway (221K tons) represented the key exporters of nitrates (excluding those of potassium)around the world, together finishing at near 65% of total exports. The Netherlands (43K tons) took a 6% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Poland (5.8%). The average nitrates export price stood at $676 per ton in 2022, surging by 32% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($1,829 per ton), while Norway ($304 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
