Molluscs Price in Malaysia (CIF) - 2021

The average molluscs import price stood at $3,509 per ton in December 2021, reducing by -7.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2021 an increase of 29% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $4,009 per ton in October 2021; however, from November 2021 to December 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($7,964 per ton), while the price for Cote d'Ivoire ($1,622 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Molluscs Price in Malaysia (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average molluscs export price amounted to $3,690 per ton, growing by 17% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 19% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $3,807 per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($18,405 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($2,760 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+19.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Molluscs Imports in Malaysia

In 2022, imports of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) into Malaysia soared to 56K tons, growing by 21% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, molluscs imports surged to $204M in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Molluscs Exports in Malaysia

For the fourth year in a row, Malaysia recorded growth in overseas shipments of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus), which increased by 7.2% to 34K tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, molluscs exports surged to $127M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +15.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +55.0% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
