Methanol Price in China (CIF) - 2023
In September 2023, the average methanol import price amounted to $275 per ton, with an increase of 6.5% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $327 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from New Zealand ($291 per ton) and Oman ($277 per ton), while the price for Trinidad and Tobago ($265 per ton) and Iran ($267 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (-0.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Methanol Price in China (FOB) - 2023
In September 2023, the average methanol export price amounted to $282 per ton, which is down by -15.2% against the previous month. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 40% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $504 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to September 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($352 per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam stood at $274 per ton.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+778.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Methanol Imports in China
In 2022, imports of methanol (methyl alcohol) into China totaled 12M tons, surging by 8.9% against the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 13M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Methanol Exports in China
In 2022, exports of methanol (methyl alcohol) from China reduced markedly to 173K tons, which is down by -56% on the previous year's figure.
