The average maize starch export price stood at $584 per ton in July 2023, shrinking by -8.4% against the previous month. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 when the average export price increased by 17% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $696 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to July 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($3,817 per ton), while the average price for exports to Namibia ($465 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+15.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average maize starch import price stood at $673 per ton in 2022, rising by 55% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a mild reduction. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $782 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($1,534 per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($418 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, exports of maize (corn) starch from South Africa skyrocketed to 30K tons, jumping by 18% compared with 2021 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, maize starch exports skyrocketed to $19M in 2022.
