Maize Price in Costa Rica (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average maize import price amounted to $352 per ton, surging by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, maize import price increased by +68.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($457 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($348 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Maize Price in Costa Rica (FOB) - 2022

The average maize export price stood at $370 per ton in 2022, jumping by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 35%. The export price peaked at $730 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nicaragua ($387 per ton), while the average price for exports to Panama ($242 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Panama (-1.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Maize Imports in Costa Rica

In 2022, supplies from abroad of maize decreased by -21.9% to 833K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 15%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 1.1M tons, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, maize imports shrank to $293M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +15.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +52.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 62%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $315M, and then fell in the following year.
