Lignite Price in Spain (CIF) - 2023

In August 2023, the average lignite import price amounted to $601 per ton, picking up by 20% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in January 2023 an increase of 218% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $3,066 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to August 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($661 per ton), while the price for China totaled $469 per ton.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (-3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Lignite Price in Spain (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average lignite export price amounted to $6,724 per ton, falling by -36.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate notable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 175%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $10,540 per ton in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Yemen ($8,843 per ton), while the average price for exports to Lebanon stood at $1,921 per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+0.7%).

Lignite Imports in Spain

In 2022, overseas purchases of lignites increased by 26% to 2K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, lignite imports skyrocketed to $2.7M in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of lignites, when their volume increased by 134% to 6.5 tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a dramatic setback.

In value terms, lignite exports surged to $44K in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant decline.
